How to be Grounded in Our Relationship with God

2 Corinthians 12:8-10 New International Version (NIV)

Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

God is our dwelling place.  He is eternal and never changes.  We need to become focused on Him.

We can do this by being grounded in weakness and humility.  In Genesis 32, Jacob wrestles with an angel.  God empowers him and gives him the strength to do so.  His heart needs to be changed.  God allows the angel to humiliate him to bring about transformation.  Then, the angel leaves him with a scar to ground him, a permanent limp in his hip.  The scar is to show him and remind him that all his strength and power come from God.  It’s a reminder to stay humble and grounded.  He can do nothing without the power of God.

2 Corinthians 12:9 – Paul begged Jesus to remove a thorn.  Jesus replied, “My grace is sufficient for you.  My power is perfected in your weakness.”  Paul had a scar that kept him feeling weak and dependent upon the Lord.  The humbleness that he needed God.  Through our weaknesses and our scars, God reminds us that we are human.  We are weak.  The sheep who need a shepherd.  Without God, we cannot accomplish anything.  It’s a humility that He is stronger and higher.  We don’t want to become prideful.  We need to know He is God.  Paul could see his weakness and became happy to boast about it and to boast about God.  Everything comes from Him.  It’s not about us, it’s all about Him.  His goodness.  This is where humility comes in to play.

To be grounded, we need to be engaged in our struggles.   Admit our weakness and then we will be empowered by God.  We need to understand there are other things we have to deal with.  We cannot seclude ourselves.  There is work to be done.  Things to take care of.  The only way to do it is with God’s power.   Remove the log from our eyes and our heart.

Admit, I am the weak one.  I am the low sheep.  God, you are the strong shepherd.  I cannot do life without you.  I am the deceiver.  My heart needs to be cleaned.  I am the one who is broken.  My mind and thoughts are dirty.  I am human.  I accept your trials and struggles, my weaknesses because through them you will make me strong.  You will empower me and help me overcome it.  You will rescue me.

We need to acknowledge what is going on inside our hearts and minds.  It is the only way to overcome.  Engage in the struggle and what is inside.  Allow God to show us our scars and be grounded in humility.  Grounded in His Word.  Stop trying to escape from our reality.  Stop trying to run and hide.  Engage in our spiritual battle.  Accept what is going on inside our hearts and mind.  Then we will be able to overcome and follow God’s will.

It is by God’s power, His will, and His plans that I will overcome.  I will claim His victory.  I have things to work on.  We all have things to work on.  It won’t be easy in the struggle but God is by our side.  God will engage with you.  Engage with Him.  Work together.  Live and work together in this moment and life.  It’s a relationship that needs daily work.

I admit Lord, I need you every moment of every day.  I embrace you.  I choose to go your way.  I pick up my cross to follow you.  You are God.  I will be still and wait for you.  Lord, please bestow your blessings upon me.  Anoint me as your child and help me to remain humble in heart.  Grounded in you and focused on you.  Help me to not forget my scars, where I came from, and that I am the weak one.  I am made strong by your power and love.  I am dependent on you.  Align my heart and mind with you.  You are higher.  In Jesus name, I pray, Amen.

I love to write inspirational and spiritual pieces that are full of encouragement and engaging. I write about real life events filled with emotion. I want to help and encourage all those who are struggling and in pain, who are suicidal, and fill them with hope. The good news. I love to cook and have a healthy cookbook available as well.
